How to Do What You Love

Paul Graham's January 2006 essay attacking the slogan "do what you love" by taking it seriously enough to ask what it actually demands. The piece traces how childhood schooling teaches us that work and fun are opposites, how that lie outlasts childhood, and how to undo it — distinguishing what you love from what's prestigious, what's lucrative, or what your parents want, and arguing that doing what you love is rarely effortless.
