Phones, brain imaging, and computational models can now follow mental life across ordinary days while preserving biological detail. That shift matters because attention, mood, and memory are shaped by changing situations, not isolated tests, and useful interventions need to work amid the noise of real experience.nnTodd Braver’s attention research shows the value of combining methods around a concrete problem. A five-year project uses fMRI and EEG to examine how stress changes the ability to monitor demanding tasks, a question relevant to radar operators but also to anyone whose work requires sustained vigilance. A related mindfulness project brings measurement into daily life through smartphone prompts and brief awareness exercises. The design can compare what people report in the moment with whether a simple practice produces lasting changes in mood and bodily awareness.nnThe work on depression and event perception adds a second layer. Repeated phone check-ins found that people with major depression actively try to regulate their feelings, challenging the stereotype that they are passive toward their emotional state. Elsewhere, Jeff Zacks’s group trained a model on recordings of daily activities so it could predict what would happen next and recognize its own uncertainty.
