Archbishop Ussher’s exact creation date offered confidence before evidence could support it, while geology and Darwin required durations long enough for landscapes and life to transform gradually. Radioactive dating and cosmology later pushed the beginning of the solar system and universe into billions of years. Each extension displaced humanity from a short, prearranged story into a much larger and less centered history.nnThe future produces an even stronger reversal. Our Sun is not halfway through its life, and any distant beings witnessing its end may be as unlike us as we are unlike simple organisms. Meanwhile, genetic modification and machine integration could change the pace and direction of human development far faster than natural selection.
