Fierce Nerds

Paul Graham's May 2021 essay on a small but interesting group: nerds who are not the stereotype of the quiet, diffident outsider but are in fact intensely competitive, often overconfident when young, and unusually independent-minded. Graham argues that this combination — intelligence, fierce competitiveness, and an aggressive (rather than passive) independent-mindedness — explains a remarkable share of the people who go on to do unusually ambitious work, in both founders and scientists.
