Hollywood vs. Religion

Film critic Michael Medved's 1989 Hillsdale College address, later published in Imprimis, arguing that an overt and pervasive hostility to religion and religious values had taken hold in mainstream American film. Drawing on his career as a Hollywood reviewer, he walks through patterns in late-1980s movies — sympathetic portrayals of clergy collapsing, faith treated as fanaticism, the religious life of ordinary Americans largely absent from the screen — and frames the gap as a cultural disconnect between the industry and most of its audience.
