Modern systems want a smooth, predictable sequence of timestamps, while human calendars still inherit their meaning from a turning planet and a visible Sun. The dispute is therefore not about one inconvenient tick; it is about whether civil time should remain answerable to the sky or become an autonomous technical service.nnAtomic clocks outperform Earth because the planet is a poor metronome. Tides, atmosphere, ice, tectonic motion and the interior all alter its rotation, while cesium atoms provide remarkably repeatable transitions. Coordinated Universal Time solves the mismatch by using atomic seconds and occasionally inserting an extra one so astronomical noon does not drift far from clock noon. The arrangement is inelegant for software but rich in continuity.nnSobel’s own isolation experiment adds a bodily counterpoint to the institutional debate. Without sunlight, clocks or social cues, her sleep-wake cycle lengthened toward 25 hours, then had to be pulled back into alignment with the outside world. That flexibility shows that biological time is neither mechanically fixed nor infinitely negotiable. Humans live inside layered rhythms—atomic, planetary, physiological and social—and synchronization always privileges one layer over another.nnWe chose this essay because it turns standards policy into a story about civilization’s relationship with nature.
