In one version, ideas hang in the air at the appointed moment and the scientist who first grasps them is essentially a stenographer for the zeitgeist — interchangeable, replaceable, even slightly accidental. In the other, individuals shape the entire trajectory of human understanding through quirks of biography, temperament, and reading list. Without Einstein, special relativity would almost certainly have arrived from Lorentz, Poincaré, or others within a few years. But general relativity, with its specific geometric reframing of gravity, may have taken decades longer — or arrived in such a different form that we'd still be untangling the alternative version. The takeaway is that fields differ: some are robust to the loss of any one mind, while others bear the deep imprint of an individual's metaphors and intuitions.nnWe picked this because it is a quietly subversive piece for anyone who believes "great ideas would have come anyway."
