One of the more useful intellectual moves you can make is to ask, when looking at an organism's most extreme feature, what kind of environment must have produced it. Simler's parable is interesting because it generalises that question into a heuristic anyone can use — and then turns it back on us as a species. The piece reads like a short biology lesson but lands as a meditation on what human nature actually reveals about the conditions our minds evolved to handle.nnThe central observation is that redwood tallness costs an enormous amount of energy — energy that could have gone into wider canopies, stronger roots, or more seeds. The only environment in which paying that cost makes evolutionary sense is one where all the redwood's competitors are doing the same thing. Redwoods aren't fighting giraffes; they're fighting other redwoods for a limited overhead resource (sunlight), and the arms race ratchets each generation toward the physical limit. The lonely wax palm in a Colombian open field looks absurd until you discover it evolved in dense rainforest.
